Prof. Ngozi Commits to Providing Safe Environment for Teachers - Anambra Ministry of Education

The Anambra State Education Commissioner, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, has taken a strong stance against any form of teacher molestation during her tenure. Speaking at the 2nd annual general meeting with Principals from public schools across the state, held at ASUBEB Hall, Awka, the Commissioner stated that the safety and well-being of teachers are paramount.

Prof. Chuma-Udeh encouraged Principals to maintain discipline and, impart morals to students without fear, emphasizing that the state fully supports their efforts. However, she highlighted that instilling discipline should not involve physical harm. The Commissioner firmly stated that the state does not endorse excessive corporal punishment in the name of correction or discipline.

Expressing her belief in alternative methods of instilling discipline, Prof. Chuma-Udeh remarked,
“I do not believe in using the cane as an effective means of correction. It is not the most flogged that goes on to become the most intelligent or well-behaved. The intelligence of a child is not determined by the severity of punishment, she stated.

The Commissioner urged Principals to address issues of molestation or threats directly and prevent schools from becoming breeding grounds for negative influences like cultism. Prof. Chuma-Udeh reiterated that excuses related to such behaviors will not be accepted, and called on school principals to take control and create a safe learning environment.

She equally stated that every form of molestation of teachers or threat to life should be reported to the Ministry of Education In her unwavering commitment to the teaching profession, Commissioner Chuma-Udeh underscored the importance of nurturing a positive atmosphere for both educators and students alike.
