The Commissioner pledged her support while welcoming the new head of Onitsha Correctional Center, Deputy Controller, Micheal Anugwa who was on courtesy to the Ministry at Udorji Secretariate Complex, Awka. Commissioner Chuma-Udeh commended, the Deputy controller, for the wonderful Initiatives taking place at the center.
Speaking, Prof.Chuma-Udeh said, “What your administration is doing at the center is wonderful because society is dependent on it. She said if the people coming into the center-left exactly how they were when they came to the center, society would suffer the consequences. Establishing a school is a wonderful initiative as it offers the inmates opportunities of living a better life when released into society, she added.
Prof Ngozi Chuma -Udeh said she believes so much in the power of education as it brings enlightenment, hence her strong support and maximum cooperation. Earlier in his speech, the new head of Onitsha Correctional Center, Deputy Controller of corrections, Micheal Anugwa said that a major challenge he faced on the assumption of duty was inheriting a correctional center that was not in tune with modern correctional facilities.
He was faced with a correctional center devoid of proper educational facilities and a conducive atmosphere for learning, adding that this went contrary to the new law governing correctional centers, he posited.
“We are empowered to recreate these people, rid them of those vices that made them come to the correctional facility so that when they leave, they leave as good citizens. Deputy controller, Micheal Anugwa opined that education and skills acquisition are strong factors in the rehabilitation process.
He said that one factor that makes former inmates re-offend is a lack of education or skills that will help earn a livelihood.
The new head called on the Ministry for help in ameliorating the dearth of subject teachers at the center.
