For a few hours in Onitsha on August 8, learning took a different form. Children explored ideas, competed, experimented and engaged with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in an atmosphere that made learning both practical and enjoyable.
It was the STEAM FunFest Anambra 2026, a family-oriented event that brought children and young people together to discover the possibilities in science, technology and creativity outside the traditional classroom.
Beyond the fun and competitions, the event offered a glimpse into the direction of education in Anambra State, where the government wants schools to become places where children cannot only learn but also experiment, create and develop solutions.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, said the Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo-led administration was committed to giving students skills that would prepare them for a changing world.
Ogugua said children needed opportunities to develop critical thinking, creativity, practical skills and problem-solving abilities, stressing that education should prepare them not only to seek jobs but also to create opportunities.
He commended the organisers and partners of the FunFest for giving children an opportunity to engage with science and technology in a relaxed and practical environment, noting that early exposure could help young people discover their talents and build confidence.
“We are preparing our children not just for the jobs of today, but for the opportunities of tomorrow,” Ogugua said, assuring that the Ministry of Education would continue to support initiatives that encourage creativity, practical learning and innovation across schools.
The vision, he said, is for Anambra schools to become places where children can learn, create, experiment and solve problems — preparing them to become the scientists, inventors, entrepreneurs and innovators of tomorrow.
